SECTOR WISE EXPORTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. TEXTILE & GARMENTS CATEGORY:
Textile Sector contributed 67% in Pak exports and went up to $8.252 Billion in 2003-04 from $7.458 Billion worth exports in 2002-03 showing an increase of 10.7%.
Major Categories that registered an increase over the previous year were: Knitwear, Cotton Fabrics, Cotton Yarn, Textile Made-ups incl. Bed ware, Tents & Canvas and Towels.
A decrease was witnessed in some Textile Items such as Yarn other than Cotton Yarn, Knitted & Crocheted Fabrics, Readymade Garmets, Raw Cotton and Synthetic Textiles.
PRODUCT WISE ANALYSIS:
COTTON FABRICS: Export of Cotton Fabrics in 2003-04 went up to $1.711 Billion from previous year's $1.346 Billion: An increase of 18.3%, 27.2% and 7.5% was recorded in Quantity, Value & A.U.P. respectively. Major buyers of the product were USA, Turkey, Hong Kong, Italy and UK.
TEXTILE MADE-UPS INCL TOWELS: Bed ware fetched $1.383 Billion in 2003-04 as against exports of $1.329 Billion in 2002-03, showing an increase of 4.1% Major buyers of the product were USA, UK, Germany, Dubai and France.
Other Made-ups increased by 15.8% over the previous year, going up to $417 Million from $360 Million. Major buyers of the product were USA, UK, Germany, Italy and France.
Towel exports as compared to 2002-03 surged by 1.2%, 7.6% and 6.4% respectively in terms of Quantity, Value and AUP. Quantity exported increased from previous year 100.6 Million Kg to 101.8 Million KG, value from $374.8 Million to 403.5 Million and AUP from $3.73 / KG to $3.96 / KG.
Major buyers of the product were USA, Dubai, UK, Canada and Netherlands.
COTTON YARN:
Rising by 21.4% from $928.4 million worth value in the last year export of the product went up to $1126.9 Million. Quantity which was 519.3 Million KG in 2002-03 came down 499.1 Million KG in 2003-04 reflecting a decline of 3.9%. However AUP which was $1.79/KG in 2002-03 went up to $2.26/Kg showing an increase of 26.3%.
Major Buyers of the product were Hong Kong, China, South Korea, USA, Bangladesh.
GARMENTS: Hosiery went up to $1.459 billion in 2003-04 from $1.147 billion in 2002-03, showing an increase of 27.2%. Upward trend was witnessed in exports to USA, UK, Germany, Netherlands and Italy. However decreases were recorded in exports to Canada, Dubai, Australia, Russia and Afghanistan.
Ready Made Garments: The exports, which were $1093 Million in 2002-03, came down to $993 Million in 2003-04, showing a decline of 9%. Exports to Canada, Dubai, Germany, Saudi Arabia and USA showed declining trend which had an adverse impact on the Pakistan's overall export of this product; however, increases took place in exports to Italy, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain and UK.
SYNTHETIC TEXTILES:
There was a decrease of US Dollar 103.5 million ie 18% over the previous year. During the period under review export came down to $471 million from $574 million. Quantity also fell by 16.9% from 787.9 M. SQM of the previous year to 654.6 M. SQM; and AUP, which was $0.73/SQM in the previous year, came down to $0.72/SQM, showing a decrease of 1.3%. Imports of our traditional markets like Dubai, USA, Saudi Arabia, Spain and South Africa were on lower side. However there was an increasing trend in the exports to Singapore, Bangladesh, Belgium, Switzerland, France and UK.
2. OTHER CORE CATEGORIES:
This head contributed 19.6% in Pak exports and went up to $2.411 billion from $2.252 billion showing an increase of 7%. Major Items showing increase in Jul-June 2003-04 over the previous corresponding period are as under.
Rice went up to $634.5 million from $555.5 million showing an increase of 14%. Quantity and AUP also increased by 0.2% & 14% respectively. In terms of Quantity total export of Rice which was 1820 thousands MT in 2002-03 went up to 1823 thousand MT, and AUP, which was $305.20/MT in 2002-03, increased to $348.08/MT.
Rice Basmati: Contributing 66.47% in total export of Rice, export of basmati rice went up to $422 Million from $361 Million, quantity went up from 717 thousand MT to 816 thousand MT, and AUP from $503.41 / MT to $516.63 / MT.
Rice Non-Basmati: Share in Rice exports was 33.53%. In terms of Value the exports went up to $212.7 Million from $194.6 Million, with an increase of 19.8% in AUP. Quantity, which was 1103 thousand MT in 2002-03, came down to 1006 thousand MT, showing a decrease of 8.8%.
Major Buyers of the Rice were Dubai, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kenya and Afghanistan.
LEATHER AND LEATHER PRODUCTS: Registering an increase of 7.1%, exports of Leather and Leather Products went up to $744 Million from $695 Million. Leather Tanned contributed 33.8%, Leather Garments / Manf. 55.7% and Leather Footwear 10.5% in the group of Leather & Leather Products.
a) Leather: increasing by 7%, the export of leather fetched $252 million as against $235 million of the previous year. Quantity & AUP also increased by 4.6% & 2.5% respectively. Major buyers of the product were Hong Kong, Italy, South Korea, China, and Germany.
b) Leather Garments / Manf.; Registered 7% increase from $386.5 million of the previous year to $414.3 million. Major Buyer of the product were USA, UK, Germany, Spain and Dubai.
c) Leather Footwear; Increased by 6.3% from $73 million of the previous year to $78 million. The Major Buyers of the product were Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, UK and Germany.
Carpet exports during the period under review were $231.4 million as compared to $220.9 million of the previous year, showing an increase of 4.8%. Major Buyers of the product were Germany, USA, Italy, France and UK.
Petroleum & its products increased by 18.5% and 20.6% in terms of Value & AUP respectively. Although there was a decline of 1.8% in terms of Quantity from 1004665 MT to 986941 MT, rise in the AUP from $247.42 / MT to $298.36 / MT, led to increase in value which went up to $294.5 million from $248.6 million. Major Buyers of the products were Dubai, Afghanistan, India, Thailand and Singapore.
Surgical Instruments; The exports, which were $150 Million 2002-03 came down to $133 Million in 2003-04, showing a decrease of 11.6%. Exports to USA, UK, South Korea, Germany and Canada showed declining trend which adversely impacted overall exports of these products; however, increases took place in France, Netherlands, Russia and Dubai.
Sports Goods; From $335 Million in 2002-03 the exports came down to $325 Million in 2003-04, showing a decrease of 3.1%. Exports to USA, Dubai, Italy, South Korea and Turkey showed declining trend which adversely impacted overall exports of these products; however, increases took place in Germany, France, Portugal, Switzerland and Denmark.
3. DEVELOPMENTAL AND OTHER CATEGORIES:
This head contributed 13.4% in Pakistan's Exports and went up to $1650 million from $1450 million, showing an increase of13.8%. Export of Wheat, which was $129.6 million in the previous year, now it is only $6 million due to non-availability of Surplus for exports. Excluding Wheat, exports in the head are 25% higher than the previous years.
Fish & Fish Preparation; In terms of Quantity, Value & AUP exports increased by 10.8%, 13.7% & 2.6% respectively. Export of Fish went up to $153 Million from $134.5 Million in terms of value, in terms of Quantity from 93214 MT to 103251 MT and AUP from $1.44 / KG to $1.48 / KG. Major Buyers of the product were Belgium, China UK, Dubai and Hong Kong.
Fruits & Vegetables: Exports were $128.4 million during the period under review, compared to $109.6 million in the previous corresponding period, showing an increase of $18.8 million ie + 17%. Major Buyers of the Product were Dubai, India, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and UK.
Chemical & its Products:- Italy, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka appeared in the export list as markets in which this product is rising, but the traditional importers like China, Dubai, Thailand, UK and Belgium registered a decline during the period under review. However, an overall increase of 0.8% was recorded. Export in terms of Value went up to $263 Million from $261 Million.
Engineering Goods:- One of the Developmental Items, Engineering Goods, stood at $100 Million as compared to $74 Million in previous year, showing an increase of $26 Million, ie +35%. Major Buyers of the Products were Afghanistan, Dubai, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Metal Manf. Incl. Cutlery compared to the previous year, exports increased by 31.3% during 2003-04. The export value went up to $76.7 million from $58.4 million.
Major Buyers were Afghanistan, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, USA, UK, Germany and France.
GEMS & JEWELRY: Increased by 13.8%. Export went up to $28.2 Million from $24.8 Million.
Major Buyers of the products were Dubai, USA, UK and Hong Kong.
Marble & Stones / Onyx Manf: Export of the product was almost stagnant Increased by 0.1% from $18.399 Million to $18.416 Million.
Major buyers of the products were USA, China, Bangladesh, Germany and Italy.
CEMENT: There was an increase of 151%. Exports grew up from $10.7 Million to $27 Million during the period under review.
Major buyers of the product were Afghanistan, Dubai, Mauritius and Tanzania. Cement Clinkers were also exported to Qatar.
SUGAR: Showing an increase of 239%, exports went up to $25.2 Million from $7.4 Million. Major Buyers were Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran and Yemen.
Oil Seeds; The exports, which were $7 Million in 2002-03, went up to $11 Million in 2003-04, showing an increase of 55%. Increases took place in exports to China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand.
GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS JULY-JUNE (2003-04)
Pakistan's exports during July-June 2003-04 as compared to the same period of the last year grew by 10.9% to American Region, 18.4% to Western Europe, 40.0% to East Europe, 17% to Asian Region and 10.2% to Oceana Region. Decrease were recorded in exports to Middle East Region by 5.7% and African Region by 8.7%.
1. AMERICAN REGION:
This region accounted for $3331 Million (27%), showing an increase of 10.9% over last year's exports.
North America accounted for $3,179 million, which is higher by 10.6 % over last year. Significant increases took place in the countries of North America: USA by 12.5% and Mexico 6%. However, a decrease of 11.8% was recorded in the export to Canada, which came down to $.182 million from $.206 million. Exports to Central America went up to $.59.4 million from $.56.5 million showing an increase of 5%. South America: an increase of 25.6% took place in this region over the previous year, the value, which was $.73.7 million in the previous year, went up to $92.5 million.
2. WESTERN EUROPE; The export to this region were $3699 million, ie 30% of total exports. 15 EU countries accounted for 29.5% and showed an increase of 18.3% as well over previous year's exports. In terms value exports increased to $3626 million from $3067 million.
Major contributing countries are UK $941 million, Germany $607 million, Italy $454 million, France $339 million, Netherlands $335 million and Spain $301 million. EFTA went up to $58.9 million from $47.7 million, showing an increase of 23.6%, Switzerland and Norway are the major buyers among the EFTA countries. Other European countries also came to be higher as compared to last year by 34%.
3. EASTERN EUROPE: Accounted for $134 Million (1%), Poland, USSR and Hungary are the major growing markets which contributed $31, $20 and $18 Million respectively.
4. ASIAN REGION: Accounted for $2534 Million (21%), the main reason for 17% higher exports in the region was export to Afghanistan, which rose to $493 million from 316 million ie +56%. Exports to China including Hong Kong increased by 14%, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Malaysia showed an increased of 70.5% 28.6% and 6.4 respectively. However main decreases were witnessed in the exports to Indonesia and Japan.
5. OCEANA REGION:
Accounted for $168 Million (1%). Increased + 10% over last year. Australia & New Zealand were major buyers and also showed an increase of 8% and 19%.
6. MIDDLE EAST REGION:
Accounted for $1922 Million (16%), with a decrease of 5.7% over last year. Exports to Saudi Arabia came down to $348.5 Million from $476.8 Million showing a decline of $128 Million ie -27%. UAE also showed a decline of 9% over the last year due to decreasing trend in the market of Dubai which came down to $894 Million from $1007 Million ie -11%.
7. AFRICAN REGION: Accounted for $535 Million (4%), fell by 8.7% over last year. Export of Wheat from Pakistan to Kenya, which had been $44 Million in the previous year, was now only $2.6 Million. Similarly exports of Wheat to Tanzania, South Africa and Sudan remained Nil in the year under review. The export of Wheat to African Countries, which was $81 Million in the year 2002-03, was now only $3 Million.
TOP 20 COUNTRIES: .
The Top 20 Countries / Major Buyers accounted for $10090 Million or 82% of total exports and grew by 11%.
Export to 15 of these countries increased with Major Percentage Growth in Bangladesh 71%, Afghanistan 56%, Turkey 50%, Italy 33%, Spain 32%, UK 19%, China (Incl. HK) 14%, Netherlands 17%, France 16%, USA 12%, South Africa 10%, Belgium 9%, Australia 8% and Germany 5%, where as declines were in Saudi Arabia 27%, Canada 12%, Dubai 11%, South Korea 8% and Japan 5%.
TOP 5 COUNTRIES ANALYSIS:
1. USA: In the year 2003-04 USA was the largest importing partner contributing 24%, with Pak export of $2943 Million, up by 12.5% over the same period of the previous year. Major Growth was in Hosiery by $141 Million, Bed ware by $92 Million, Cotton Yarn by $46 Million, Cotton Fabrics by $42 Million, Towels by $40 Million and Other Made-ups of Textiles by $32 Million.
However some major declines over last year were recorded in Synthetic Textiles by $23 Million, Ready Made Garments by $10 Million, Surgical Instruments by $12 Million and Sports Goods by $9 Million.
2. UK: In the year 2003-04 Germany was the 2nd largest importing partner contributing 7.6%, with Pak Export of $941 Million, up by 19% over the same period of the previous year. Major Growth was in Hosiery by $55 Million, Cotton Fabrics by $25 Million, Bed ware by $24 Million, Other Made-ups of Textiles by $15 Million and Leather Clothing by $7 Million.
However some major declines over last year were recorded in Chemical & its Products by $7 Million, Surgical Instruments by $2 Million and Carpets by $1 Million.
3. DUBAI: In the year 2003-04 Dubai was the 3rd largest importing partner contributing 7.3%, with Pak Export of $894 Million, down by 11% as compared to the same period of the previous year. Major declines over last year were recorded in Art Silk & Synthetic Textiles by $46 Million, Ready made Garments by $27 Million, Bed Ware by $29 Million and Towel by $16 Million.
However major Growth was recorded in Rice by $26.6 Million, Leather Clothing by $6 Million, Leather Gloves by $4 Million, Fruits by $3 Million and Fish by $3 Million.
4. GERMANY: In the year 2003-04 Germany was the 4th largest importing partner contributing 4.9%, with Pak Export of $607 Million up by 5% over the same period of the previous year. Major Growth was in Hosiery by $20 Million, Cotton Fabrics by $20 Million, Carpets by $7 Million, Sports Goods by $4 Million and Leather Gloves by $2 Million.
However some major declines against last year were recorded in Ready made Garments by $10 Million, Bed Ware by $11 Million and Leather Tanned by $2 Million.
5. HONG KONG:
In the year 2003-04 Hong Kong was the 5th largest importing partner contributing 5%, with Pak Export of $582 Million, up by 13% over the same period of the previous year. Major Growth was in Cotton Yarn by $62 Million, Leather Tanned by $14 Million, Bed Ware by $4 Million, Hosiery by $3 Million and Chemical Products by $1 Million.
However some major declines against the previous year were also recorded in Cotton Fabrics by $10 Million, Sports Goods by $1 Million and Art Silk Synthetic Textiles by $1 Million.
